Candler – Omie Carson Smith, age 90, of Linda Vista Drive, died Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the John F. Keever Solace Center.

A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late George and Gracie Howard Carson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Smith, who died in 1997; her first husband, Raymond Howard, who died in 1978; a daughter, Gladys Howard Trantham; and a son, Ernest Smith. Omie was a member of the Luther Pentacostal Holiness Church. To her family, she was the finest mother who ever lived and she is in the presence of the Lord.

She is survived by five sons, Levi Howard of Swannanoa, Reverend Bobby Howard and his wife, Edith, of Brevard, Charlie Howard and his wife, Sandy, of Mt. Holly, Edward Smith and his wife, Lois, of Candler, and Jack Smith and his wife, Betty, of Shelby; one daughter, Linda Shuler and her husband, Danny, of Candler; three brothers, Mack and Wayne Carson of Bryson City, and Troy Carson of Brevard; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 8, 2010 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Tim Howard and Reverend Betty Drake officiating. Burial will follow at Laurel Branch Cemetery in Bryson City with a graveside committal service and family viewing at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. At other times, the family will be at the home.
